Celebrate Halloween In The Metaverse With Crypto Rewards and Costumes

Oct 30, 2024

Halloween traditionally involves dressing up and eating loads of candy, but the Web3 community is taking a virtual, decentralized approach to the holiday.

A number of parties in the Metaverse will enable people from across the globe to participate in Halloween this year.

Sebastien Borget, COO and Co-Founder of the metaverse-gaming platform The Sandbox, told Cryptonews that celebrating Halloween with community and friends is something we often do in the real world. Yet as society continues to modernize, he believes that more communities will exist online.

Indeed, recent statistics show Metaverse user growth to be on the rise. By 2030, the number of users in the Metaverse market is expected to reach 2,633 million.

Spooky Season In The Sandbox

Given this, Borget shared that The Sandbox is currently hosting a Halloween-themed event called “Spooky Season 4.” The event occurs within Alpha Season 4, The Sanbox’s latest and most popular Metaverse experience.

“Spooky Season 4 is a special Halloween-themed event taking place within Alpha Season 4 for one thrilling week,” Borget said. “Players are invited to play eerie games for a chance to earn The Sandbox in-game SAND rewards, dress up their avatars in festive costumes, unleash their creativity by designing Halloween-themed experiences and more.”

Borget anticipates that themed events like Spooky Season 4 will generate additional participation within The Sandbox.

“Halloween’s classic elements are immersive, playful experiences filled with sweet rewards and spooky thrills,” he said. “And, all of the winning experiences this year will share a prize pool of 30,000 SAND rewards.”

Halloween-Themed Events In Decentraland

Decentraland – one of the largest Metaverse projects in Web3 – is also celebrating Halloween.

On October 31, the platform will host a “Tru Band Room 3rd Anniversary & Halloween Bash.” This event kicks off the holiday with a live performance by self-taught musician Ash Orphan.

Decentraland’s “Exodus 2024 Halloween” also takes place now through November 3. This event allows players to earn additional in-game rewards while unlocking unique costumes for their avatars.

Kim Currier, Head of Partnerships and Marketing at the Decentraland Foundation, told Cryptonews that celebrating Halloween in virtual worlds allows users to connect with others without having to travel.

“One of the biggest challenges in the physical world is figuring out which group you’re celebrating with and where,” she said. “But in the Metaverse, you’re not limited by location. You can bring everyone together to celebrate in one place, or jump from event to event seamlessly.”

Currier added that costumes are a large part of Halloween and that endless opportunities exist in the Metaverse.

“In Decentraland, you can switch outfits effortlessly using community-created wearables in the marketplace. Start as a fairy with wings, transform into a skeleton, or go from dragon to athlete, all in one night without missing a moment of the fun!”

Halloween Unleashes Excitement in Upland

Upland – a Metaverse platform focused on virtual real estate – also has Halloween events planned this year.

Danny Brown Wolf, Upland’s Chief of Staff, told Cryptonews that Halloween is the most exciting time in Upland.

“Upland is mapped for the real-world, which means users build a blockchain-based virtual real estate empire,” Brown Wolf said. “Just like in real life, users can enjoy decorating their properties with Halloween virtual assets.”

She further shared that Upland is running a social contest in which players take unique pictures inside its immersive haunted plaza. The virtual plaza resembles San Francisco’s city center plaza and was designed by a player who won Upland’s design contest this year.

“A few lucky winners will receive up to 50,000 UPX (Upland in-game currency),” said Brown Wolf.

Halloween Expected To Increase Metaverse Engagement

Brown Wolf added that Halloween is traditionally Upland’s strongest day in terms of daily active users.

“This is due to the different in-game activities and activations around the holiday,” she remarked.

Echoing this, Currier pointed out that holiday events are always highlights in Decentraland.

“Events spark a boost in activity as the community comes together to celebrate. Halloween gives the community a fantastic opportunity to showcase their creativity to a growing audience,” she commented.

Borget added that Halloween and other festivities present a unique opportunity for Metaverse platforms to engage with their community through limited-edition rewards.

For example, he noted that The Sandbox airdropped a special Pumpkin Mask NFT for all Sandbox LAND owners and avatar holders.

“Players who own the Pumpkin Mask NFT and complete the quests in all of the featured experiences in Spooky Season 4 will receive a share of the 30,000 SAND prize pool,” he said. “Ethos Points (EP) collected from completing these quests will also contribute to their Battle Pass progression in Alpha Season 4, unlocking rewards that extend beyond the Spooky Season 4 event.”

Don’t Get Tricked This Halloween

Although Halloween-themed events may increase Metaverse engagement, users should exercise extra caution during the holiday season.

Woody Cheng, Vice President of Business Development at hardware wallet provider SecuX, told Cryptonews that there are often Halloween-themed “crypto horror stories” that take place during this time.

“This can include fake airdrops that lure investors into phishing scams, malicious links disguised as ‘crypto treats,’ and fake ‘limited-time offers’ that appear urgent and attractive,” he said.

In such cases, Cheng warned that users might be tricked into revealing their private keys or sending funds to fake wallet addresses, which could lead to a loss of funds.

“Additionally, Halloween market volatility can drive panic-selling or impulsive buying,” he remarked. “When fear and excitement impact decisions, investors are left vulnerable to scams and market manipulation.”
