Arbitrum Orbit, the highly-anticipated custom blockchain solution from Offchain Labs, is ready for mainnet deployment.
Using Orbit, developers can now permissionlessly construct their own chains atop Arbitrum’s Layer 2 infrastructure. According to the project, ten Orbit chains are already in various stages of development.
“Building an inclusive ecosystem where teams can permissionlessly launch Orbit Chains while harnessing the benefits of Arbitrum technology is an exciting step for the growth of the community,” A.J. Warner, CSO of Offchain Labs, told the Defiant.
A key feature of Orbit is its integration with an alternate data availability solution called AnyTrust, which further reduces transaction fees compared to Arbitrum One, the leading Layer 2 network with $1.8B in total value locked (TVL).
Orbit also introduces Stylus, a tool which enables developers to write smart contracts in Rust, C, and C++ while maintaining full EVM compatibility. This allows for an enhanced developer experience and opens up new use cases, while significantly reducing gas costs by leveraging the efficiency of WebAssembly (WASM) technology.
Orbit chains retain the flexibility to adopt future upgrades to Nitro, the underlying tech stack of Arbitrum. This means that Orbit chains can seamlessly add planned features like permissionless validation and MEV capture without approval from the Arbitrum DAO.
